Hikers on a misty stone staircase in Madeira's mountains

PR1 in One Paragraph

🇵🇹 Before You Hike (2026 Update)

  • Standard trails: €4.50 per person
  • PR1 (Pico do Arieiro → Pico Ruivo): €10.50 per person (full route, since the 1 May 2026 reopening)
  • Book at: simplifica.madeira.gov.pt

Check trail status before you go: IFCN official trail status · IPMA weather

📌 PR1 was closed for about 20 months after rockfalls and reopened on 1 May 2026, one-way only past the Pedra Rija viewpoint. Always verify current status with IFCN, because conditions change. Some guided tours include your trail fee (check the listing). See recommended tours below ↓

PR1, the Vereda do Areeiro, runs 6.1km from Pico do Arieiro (1,818m) to Pico Ruivo (1,862m), Madeira's highest point. The official IFCN time is about 3 hours. In between, the path drops to about 1,491m and climbs back up, through tunnels and long stone staircases along an exposed ridge. Since it reopened on 1 May 2026, PR1 is one-way past the Pedra Rija viewpoint: you cannot walk back the way you came. That single rule decides how you should book it. From Pico Ruivo, most people continue 2.8km down the PR1.2 to Achada do Teixeira, where a transfer, a second car or a pre-booked taxi has to be waiting.

The Morning PR1 Taught Me to Respect It

The first time I hiked PR1, I made the classic mistake: I thought 6.1km didn't sound far. What 6.1km doesn't tell you is the long stone staircases, the pitch-black tunnels, and the stretch where the path narrows along a sheer drop. I finished in 5 hours because I kept stopping to catch my breath, and my knees ached for two days. Bring 2L of water minimum. I ran out at the 4km mark and had to ration the last sips through the final staircase section.

Now I tell everyone the same thing: this isn't a walk, it's an endurance day, and the views from the ridge are the reward. If you have knee problems or vertigo, do PR1.2 from Achada do Teixeira instead. You reach the same summit on 2.8km of paved path with about 270m of climbing.

The One-Way Rule: How You Get Back

This is where most PR1 plans fall apart. You start at Arieiro and finish at Achada do Teixeira, on the other side of the mountain. Walking back is not allowed, so you have three options:

  • A sunrise or morning transfer. A shared van takes you from Funchal or Caniço to Arieiro and collects you at Achada do Teixeira. There is no guide on the trail. This is what I recommend to most people.
  • A guided small-group hike. A guide walks the ridge with you, and the return is usually arranged (check the listing). It costs more, but someone else is reading the fog and the trail.
  • Two cars, or a car plus a pre-booked taxi from Achada do Teixeira back to Arieiro. Book the taxi before you start. Don't plan on finding one up there.

Sunrise Transfer To Pico Do Arieiro, Hike To Pico Ruivo & Return From Teixeira: My Default Pick

I booked Sunrise Transfer To Pico Do Arieiro, Hike To Pico Ruivo & Return From Teixeira for my second PR1, and it fixed every problem I'd had the first time. The van picked us up in Funchal in the dark and had us at Arieiro before sunrise. We watched the light come up over the clouds, then walked the ridge at our own speed. The same company picked us up at Achada do Teixeira and drove us back to our accommodation. No parking fight at 5:30 AM, no second car, no taxi to arrange.

What it isn't: a guided hike. You walk on your own, and the pickup time at Achada do Teixeira is fixed, so slow hikers need to keep moving. The operator takes up to 8 guests per transfer, so book ahead in summer. The PR1 SIMplifica permit costs 10.50 EUR; check the listing for whether it's included.

If you don't care about sunrise, the Morning Transfer To Pico Do Arieiro, Hike To Pico Ruivo & Return From Teixeira runs the same route later in the morning, with the same no-guide setup.

Sunrise Guided Hike PR1 Pico do Areeiro Pico Ruivo small group: If You Want a Guide

Sunrise Guided Hike PR1 Pico do Areeiro Pico Ruivo small group is the one I suggest to friends who have never hiked a mountain ridge. It's guided and capped at 8 travellers, and it starts early enough to catch first light, often above the clouds. Viator lists it at six to eight hours. The guide sets the pace, which is reassuring on the exposed sections and in fog, but it also means you won't race ahead. It costs roughly double the self-guided transfers.

For a daytime guided option, Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo (PR 1) - Hiking Tour in Madeira covers the same ridge in about six hours. Check on Viator how it handles the return before you book.

What the Trail Is Actually Like

The first section from Arieiro is the most photographed: a stone path and staircases along a narrow ridge, with drops on both sides. Then come the tunnels. Bring a headlamp; your phone torch will feel weak and you'll want both hands free. After the low point near 1,491m, the climb back up toward Pico Ruivo is long and mostly stairs, and this is where tired legs start to complain.

Near the end you reach the Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo, the mountain shelter below the summit, where PR1 meets PR1.2. From there it's a short climb to the top at 1,862m. Then you turn onto PR1.2 for the 2.8km walk down to Achada do Teixeira on a paved path.

The weather is the real variable. I've stood at Arieiro in January with the wind chill well below zero and the clouds below me lit up at dawn. I've also stood there in July when the fog was so thick I couldn't see my hiking partner 5m away. Pack a thermal layer, a windproof jacket, a sun hat and sunglasses in the same bag, whatever the season.

Before You Go: Permit and Trail Status

PR1 needs a SIMplifica permit: 10.50 EUR per person for the full route. A 4.50 EUR permit covers only the Areeiro to Pedra Rija out-and-back, not the full traverse, and the PR1.2 permit doesn't cover PR1 either. Book it online before you arrive, because you show a QR code at the trail entry.

IFCN publishes trail status on Visit Madeira's hiking page. Check it on the morning of your hike. PR1 was closed for about 20 months before the May 2026 reopening, and closures after rain or rockfall happen with little notice. If PR1 is shut, PR1.2 from Achada do Teixeira is the standard backup to the same summit.

For the side-by-side choice between the two routes, see our PR1 vs PR1.2 comparison, and for sunrise timing and parking at Arieiro, our Pico do Arieiro sunrise guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the PR1 hike?

PR1 is 6.1km one-way from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, and the official IFCN time is about 3 hours. Most people then walk 2.8km down the PR1.2 to Achada do Teixeira for their pickup. Allow extra time for photos, fog and the staircases.

Can I hike PR1 there and back?

No. Since the 1 May 2026 reopening, PR1 is one-way past the Pedra Rija viewpoint, so walking back to Pico do Arieiro is not allowed. Arrange a transfer, a second car or a pre-booked taxi from Achada do Teixeira.

Do I need a permit for PR1?

Yes. The SIMplifica permit for the full PR1 route costs 10.50 EUR per person. The 4.50 EUR permit covers only the Areeiro to Pedra Rija out-and-back. Book online before you go.

Is PR1 suitable for beginners?

It is hard work. The route has tunnels, exposed ridge sections and long stone staircases. Fit beginners manage it, but anyone with vertigo or knee problems should choose PR1.2 from Achada do Teixeira, which reaches the same summit.

Do I need a guide for PR1?

No, the trail is marked. A shared transfer solves the return without a guide. A guided small-group hike makes sense if you have no mountain experience or the forecast shows fog.

What should I bring on PR1?

At least 2L of water, a headlamp for the tunnels, a warm layer, a windproof jacket, sun protection and shoes with good grip. Your SIMplifica QR code too.
